Spinach is a nutritious, leafy green that has amazing health benefits. This is how easy it is to get a bumper harvest with your My Greens Tower

Why Choose the My Greens NFT System for Spinach?

The My Greens NFT hydroponic system involves a thin film of nutrient-rich water flowing continuously over the plant roots in a slight channel. This method is ideal for leafy greens like spinach because:

  • It provides constant nutrient access.
  • Roots get ample oxygen for healthy growth.
  • It minimizes water and nutrient wastage.
  • It’s efficient and relatively low-maintenance.

What You'll Need

  • Grow Channels: Long, shallow channels where the spinach roots will sit, our My Greens garden tower has six channels which each hold 8 plants (a total of 48 plants overall).
  • Pump & Reservoir: A water pump circulates the nutrient solution from the reservoir to the top grow channels, which then trickles back down.
  • Nutrient Solution: A balanced mix of essential nutrients tailored for spinach growth, our all purpose nutrient mix is a perfect combination.
  • Net Pots: To hold the spinach seedlings, which come in white or black.
  • Seeds: Start with high-quality spinach seedlings for better results.
  • Light Source: Adequate natural sunlight

Step-by-Step Process

Set Up Your System: Set up your My Greens Hydroponic Garden Tower

Prepare the Nutrient Solution: Fill the reservoir with water and mix in the appropriate nutrients. Spinach thrives with a pH level between 5.8 and 6.5.

Plant Your Seedlings: Germinate your spinach seeds in rockwool or clay beads until they develop a small root system. You can do this in the My Greens system or you can do this elsewhere, then, transfer the seedlings to net pots and place them into the grow channels.

Circulate the Nutrient Film: Start the pump to ensure a thin film of nutrient-rich water flows continuously over the roots. Monitor the flow to avoid stagnant water or overly dry roots.

Lighting and Temperature: Spinach requires 10-14 hours of light daily for optimal growth. If natural light is insufficient, use LED grow lights. Maintain a temperature range between 18°C and 24°C. Night time temperature drops (not below 2 degrees) do not significantly affect the plants.

Monitor and Maintain: Regularly check the pH and nutrient levels of the solution, ensuring it meets the plant's needs. Inspect roots for signs of overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.

Harvesting Your Spinach

Spinach is usually ready to harvest within 4 to 6 weeks. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the outer leaves, allowing the plant to continue growing for future harvests.

Tips for Success

  • Cleanliness is Key: Prevent algae and bacteria buildup by cleaning the system regularly.
  • Prevent Bolting: Keep temperatures cool to avoid spinach going to seed prematurely.
  • Experiment & Adjust: Fine-tune your system based on plant growth and local conditions.
