What can I grow in a
Hydroponic Tower?
Growing with Hydroponics does not mean you can only grow lettuce. You can grow a wide variety of plants in a My Greens NFT hydroponic system. The limitation factor is the plant's root size, which is why we DO NOT recommend tomatoes (the root systems are very likely block the gullies). Other larger plants like large set brassicas, chillis and some leafy greens such as Mizona are also known to grow larger root systems, which may require more effort to remove from the gullies once the plant is finished. Mini or dwarf varieties are more manageable.
Please note: for obvious reasons, we do not recommend root vegetables.
What we grow in our NFT Hydroponic System
-
Greens
All the lettuces can think of! Plus rocket, mesclun, mizona, mustard leaf, pak choi, silverbeet, spinach, kale. These are our go-to for fast growing hydroponic greens.
-
Brassicas
Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, bok choi, watercress. Don't let the brassicas grow oversize, or go to seed, or the root systems can cause a blockage.
-
Herbs
Parsley, mint, sage, weeping rosemary & Oregano, tarragon, dill, cilantro or coriander, thyme, basil, chives. *Mint & Coriander can be temperamental.
-
Vegetables
Spring onion, leek, peas and beans. Tie a runner around the gully then up to the top beam for peas/beans to climb up.
-
Strawberries
Choose your favourite variety, they all grow well in Hydroponics. Just delicious.
-
Bigger plants
You can successfully grow chilli and capsicum in this tower, the root systems may get large and create a blockage, so monitor and trim.
Seasonal Hydroponic planting guide
Growing with Hydroponics in New Zealand does not mean you can only grow lettuce. We plant with the seasons to get a great varied crop, if you're planting your system indoors or in a greenhouse, your seasons will be extended due to the added warmth. We can grow a wide variety in our outdoor NFT hydroponic system, let's explore what we can achieve.
